 From ‘Whale & Dolphin Conservation’….

“Ghost gear - lost or abandoned fishing nets and ropes - is drifting through UK seas, killing whales, dolphins and other marine life - but thanks to you, we’re taking action to stop it.

When a whale gets caught in ghost gear, it can stop them reaching the surface to breathe, or they could suffer for days, weeks or months suffering a slow and painful death.

Yet no one’s taking responsibility.

Disposing of old gear is expensive, and many UK harbours lack proper waste processing facilities. So, fishers who find ghost gear at sea may have no choice but to leave it floating in the ocean.

That’s why we’re calling on the UK governments to make the UK #GhostGearFREE by:

  • Making it free for fishers to dispose of gear at all harbours
  • Ensuring every harbour has a system to receive and process old gear

Thanks to your incredible support, we’ve gathered evidence to push for change. And while we wait for government action, we’ve funded the amazing team at Ghost Fishing UK to head out into the ocean and pull deadly gear from the water before it harms more wildlife. We’ll share the results of these retrieval missions, made possible by you.

This is just the beginning. We’ll keep up the pressure until we make the UK #GhostGearFREE.

On behalf of all the whales and dolphins, thank you so much.

We must help

Whales helping each other escape from fishing gear is fascinating, but it’s also heartbreaking. These threats exist because of us, and no one is taking responsibility. Thanks to you, we’re speaking up to make the UK #GhostGearFREE.

Dolphin research

When you think about Japan and whales, it might be hunting that comes to mind - but there’s another side to this country’s relationship with whales and dolphins. WDC’s Katrin met with researcher Leanne to learn about the movement of people working to protect them.

Saving the seabed

You may have seen the devastating impact of bottom trawling in David Attenborough’s recent documentary Ocean. We've been urging the UK government to ban this harmful practice in marine protected areas - and thanks to mounting pressure, they’re now considering it.
