From ‘Wild Justice’…..

“In this newsletter; we ask you to support our new crowd-funder for our legal challenge against the Badger cull, we ask you to ‘save the date’ for the Ban Driven Grouse Shooting petition debate, and we provide you with updates on the government's consultation on heather burning and on our Planning Bill legal challenge.

Our legal challenge against the Badger cull:

We recently heard we’ve been granted permission for our legal challenge against the granting of Badger cull licences to proceed to a full judicial review (click here to read about it). The case, brought by Wild Justice and The Badger Trust, is expected to be heard in court later this year.

Before that there will be an interim hearing next month to deal with costs, following Natural England’s attempt to increase our costs should we lose the case, in what we perceive as an attempt to intimidate us from bringing the legal challenge (read our blog on this).

Although we are focusing on cull licences that were issued in 2024, we anticipate that Natural England will be deciding imminently about 2025 supplementary Badger cull licences. Click here for a good summary from The Badger Trust of the court documents that were released into the public domain on 15th May.

How our case goes in the courts could have big repercussions for Badgers in the field, when it comes to future supplementary culling licences.

This is where you – our supporters – come in. Wild Justice has always been funded entirely by public donations. We aim to act on behalf of wildlife (this time Badgers) and the environment in the courts – and to do that takes both time and money.

Today we’re asking you to support our crowd-funder for our Badger case. We need to raise £52,486 to cover our, and The Badger Trust’s legal costs. We’ve already had a massively generous response, and we hope that you - the thousands of Badger lovers who read our newsletters - can help us reach our target. Together we can help resist these barbaric and unjustified culls.

Please click here to donate to our crowd-funder.

And – for the first 100 people generous to donate £150 or above to our crowd-funder, we have produced 100 limited edition prints of Edith Pritchett’s comic strip on Badgers, signed by Chris Packham, Ruth Tingay and Bob Elliot.

Note: If you're one of these generous donors and you'd like to claim your limited edition print, please email a screenshot of your donation, with your name and address to admin@wildjustice.org.uk and we can organise getting your print mailed to you.

If you have already donated via our website, PayPal or by cheque, thank you – we have transferred some of those funds across to the crowd-funder and will be transferring the rest shortly.

If, for any unexpected reason, we raise more money than we need to fund this challenge then unspent funds will be retained in our CrowdJustice account and will be available for Wild Justice to use for other similar legal cases on behalf of UK wildlife.

Save the date – ban driven grouse shooting petition.

Good news! We have a date for our Ban Driven Grouse Shooting petition debate. It will take place on Monday 30 June at 4.30pm in Westminster Hall, the parallel debating chamber of the House of Commons.

You’ll be able to watch the debate live online – and we hope it will be well attended by MPs from across the U.K.

Watch this space – we’ll soon send out a briefing for you to share with your MPs, which will inform them about why driven grouse shooting should be banned and it gives you an opportunity to ask them to attend the debate on 30 June 2025.

Burning consultation – thank you for your responses.

We asked you if you would respond to the government’s public consultation on heather and grass burning in England. Over 450 of you have taken the time to do so – that’s amazing! Well done and thank you!

Planning Bill challenge:

This is still ticking away in the background – we have a meeting with our lawyers soon to discuss our next steps, which we’ll tell you about shortly.

Our Lost Nature report:

We were very pleased to see the report we published with friends at the University of Sheffield - Lost Nature - featured in the New Scientist magazine. Click here to read it.

That's it for now! More updates from this busy period soon.

Thank you.

Wild Justice (CEO: Bob Elliot. Directors: Chris Packham and Ruth Tingay).
