"Is a River Alive?

An Interview with Robert Macfarlane

Rivers “irrigate our bodies, thoughts, songs, and stories,” says acclaimed author Robert Macfarlane, who returns to the podcast this week to explore what happens when we reimagine a river as alive. Within the currents of this conversation, he speaks about his latest book, which journeys on the Río Los Cedros in Ecuador, the waterways of Chennai, India, and the Mutehekau Shipu in Nitassinan, and shares how an encounter with a river aura moved him into the depths of its mystery. Experiences like these, Robert hopes, can help us envision an ethics and politics that recognizes the continuity between us and bodies of water, and find our way back to honoring their willful, unruly, and spirited beinghood.

“That move into mystery

               is not an abandonment of

perception

                into a cloud of unknowing.

It’s a move

    into a different form

                     of knowing.”

—Robert Macfarlane
