Anglo-Saxon Metal-working!......
Copied from friend Pete’s FB page, written by Joe Tyler….
“The big project reveal is here!
The early Anglo- Saxon smith
Myself and Tom Tribe @ironboarforge have taken on a very large project that will see us re constructing currently over 350 metal items of the early Anglo-Saxon period.
We will be making every version of item, for example every type of belt buckle, axe, spear, tool etc.
Starting with the Iron work then moving onto the non ferrous items.
We are working alongside archaeologists and museums across the UK to ensure accuracy and authenticity.
Gratitude note
Blacksmith Pete Smith is one of our lecturers from when we trained at Herefordshire school of blacksmithing. Pete donated a Huge amount of Iron that is supporting a massive part of this project. We can not be thankful enough to Pete for supporting this venture.
Where are we currently?
So far I am working through the entirety of the Swanton typology. 14 of 31 spears have been made so far, ahnd some smith tools are also complete.
We will be recording the project as we go, showing experiments , problems along the way as well as successes.
Making everything from every day items, tooling, weaponry and high status implements.
What happens When the project is complete?
We plan to tour and display the project offering talks in the future.
Currently we estimate a further 2-3 years until we are at a stage near completion.
A new page dedicated to the project will be launched later this weekend called TheSaxonSmiths on instagram. But I will also update using this page.
Follow the adventure as it unfolds
