A Small King

A Mystical Rewilding Along Portugal’s Rio Côa

by Nicholas Triolo

“What I think I desired most was a source of renewable divinity that could orient me to the day’s polycrisis of dislocation and despair, runaway automation and climate spiral, a cultural hyperworship of the self.”

For Christian mystic Thomas Merton, the living world shimmered with a divine feminine presence—a fecund and endless substance, sprung from the unseen world, that spoke to him from grove, in birdsong, on the breath of wind. Everything existed within the invisible fabric of this wholeness and was infused with God’s divinity, which meant all was worthy of our love.

In this story, writer Nicholas Triolo walks the 140-kilometer length of the Rio Côa in central Portugal—from its birth along the Spanish border to its confluence with the Douro River—with a book of Merton’s writings in his pack. Along this winding landscape, damaged by agriculture and home to endangered animals like the Iberian lynx and Sorraia horse, he witnesses the messy, subversive nature of “rewilding.” With Merton as his companion on the journey, Nicholas begins to feel a wild, relational divinity in the fields of broom and the snarls of boars around him, and a devotion essential to rewilding place and self amid today’s crises of despair and destruction.

Years ago, Mike and I  were working at the Cota Doñana nature reserve in Spain, had gone for a stroll in the evening, and this happened –

 The Lynx

 Walking by, stopped, frozen –

“What is it?  Will it hurt me?  Can I eat it?”

Continues cautiously –

“You never know, with humans.”

We looked at the Lynx, the Lynx looked at us, all thinking much the same things – living - connecting.  Then we each carried on our way.

An Iberian Lynx, nearly driven to extinction by…..us.

Stay connected.

Keep Trump Out….

Open Britain posted a new update on 'Keep Trump out of Parliament'......

"CAMPAIGN UPDATE: 20 April 2025

Last month, the Speaker of the House of Commons confirmed to us that no request had been made for Donald Trump to address Parliament during his expected State Visit to the UK.

But since then, Trump has gone public with his claim that he’s coming to the UK in September, and media reports suggest preparations are well underway. That’s why we’ve now sent a follow-up letter to the Speaker, asking three urgent questions:- Has a formal request now been received for Trump to address both Houses of Parliament? - Are discussions about such a request currently taking place? - Does the Speaker agree that it would be wrong to extend this honour to someone who has repeatedly undermined democratic values?

We’ve been clear: this isn’t about party politics, it’s about preserving the dignity and reputation of Parliament. This honour of addressing Parliament should be reserved for foreign leaders who demonstrably uphold democratic principles, not those whose words and deeds undermine them daily.

We’ve also made clear that the public is watching - and won’t accept this decision being made behind closed doors.📣 What’s NextWe’re preparing:- A briefing note to go to all MPs- Targeted communications to other key decision-makers in this process- Further public mobilisation if an invitation looks likelyIf you’ve already signed the petition - thank you! Please share it now to help us reach 75,000 signatures. And if you can, please chip in to help fund the next phase of this campaign. Together, we can ensure that Parliament does not provide a stage for a wannabe dictator whose only interest in democracy is as a cloak to disguise his true intentions.”
