Humans Should Know Better……

I was having a discussion with a neighbour about the relative merits/de-merits of China and America, which reminded me of when I wrote this…

In the Wake of the Sandbound

by Nick Hunt

“Once upon a time giants sculpted the sand, but now it is us who are the giants. The question we must ask now is how we use our power.”

Home to vast sands raised from the sea five thousand years ago, the wooden throne of a giantess, and legends of a vindictive dragon, the Curonian Spit on the Baltic Sea is a storied landscape that has been profoundly shaped by humans. Traversing the spine of the spit, which stretches sixty miles from Lithuania in the north to the Russian Federation in the south, journalist Nick Hunt learns how its sands—anchored by forest roots for millennia—began to move rapidly in the eighteenth century when woodlands and sacred groves were systematically clear-cut for timber. Surging into towering mounds, the sands swallowed villages whole. Though halted through engineering and reforestation, today the dunes—some inert, some still migrating—are eroding under human footsteps, and spilling into the lagoon they border. Witnessing how quickly landscapes are changed by our own hands, Nick asks if the challenge is not in reversing the damage we’ve done, but in remembering humility before the inexorable forces of the Earth.”
