Deal or No Deal?......Thinking About Dogs….Overbigging…..

While hiking in a forest,
wondering if a storm-fallen tree
could be a metaphor, I found
a man wearing a black Prada suit
with red pinstripes, waiting
for me where two trails meet.
With a slick smile, he offered me a deal—
a full-time muse, an eternally half-empty
bottle of wine and all the fame and money
available to a poet in America.
When I asked what was in it for him,
he winked, "You know what I want."
I was tempted. A muse would be nice,
these long lonely nights and the bottle
would lessen the frustration of being a poet
predestined for obscurity.
But this extraordinary offer
required extraordinary evidence.
After all, I might be dreaming, deluded or deceived
by some crossroads charlatan. I thought for a few
then I realized asking for proof would be pointless.
So I walked on, leaving him behind.
Let's say he proved his existence
by conjuring a magnificent muse
with a picnic basket— then I'd know
better than to accept
because another fifty years of life,
no matter how delightful,
would be small consolation
throughout eternity.
And if he couldn't prove
he was more than mere man
then he's a simple scammer
or worse.
What's the moral of this poem?
Don't bother me if you see me on a hike.
