Stillness in Motion……. Hoy - again....

by Bernie Bell - 07:40 on 07 April 2025

Stillness in Motion

The wind relentless from Pentland Firth
Suspends a gull above the churning waves.
No flapping wings resist gravity.
Her position determined by posture.
Stillness in motion.

Neither gust nor lull disturb her flight.
She reacts to each before they occur.
No divorce of self from surroundings.
She is made of muscle, feather and wind.
Stillness in motion.

To hold fixed in a torrent of air,
She makes no plans, savors no memories.
She is fully present, nothing more.
Immersed in the gale, stillness in motion.

(This is a minor revision of a poem I wrote in the year 1999. It was the first poem I ever submitted for publication as an adult. I printed it out and hand addressed an envelope. (How quaint!) Four years ago I did a major revision for that April Poem-a-Day Challenge.)
