Ripples……’Please Support The Bracken’….

by Bernie Bell - 07:53 on 20 March 2025

Ripples……

We were in Kirkwall, by the Harbour, watching the effect that the presence of a small boat had on the ripples in the water.  And Mike took some pictures……

Any one of which could be a painting.

Please support the Bracken.....

I’ve always wanted to do this. I only wish it was a huge comedy cheque, but you can’t have everything.

It’s a cheque for £350, kindly donated to the Bracken Trust by my friends at the Presteigne Panto Players. Presteigne Panto, insane cultural highlight of the build up to Christmas here in East Radnorshire, (more like a cross between a mummers play on crack and an anarcho-syndicalist kids party than a conventional panto), has always given its profits to charity. This year, the chosen charity is The Bracken Trust, who give so much help and support to cancer patients and their families in Mid-Wales. It’s just a wonderful place to sit and talk; to fellow patients, to counsellors and therapists, and to the always on duty nurse, who was able to offer me sage advice today. Writing advice, that is.

I map my ‘cancer journey’ against that of my cancerous character Frank. By a strange coincidence, we both have the same kind of cancer. How weird is that? I try to write, as far as possible, as realistically about stage four cancer as I can. But, from that point of view, there is one thing that I can’t write about from experience, and that, of course, is the end. The nurse today was kind enough today to talk to me as Ian Marchant, hard-nosed writer, trying to ferret out the truth, rather than as poor old Ian, Cancer Bloke, trying to avoid it, for as long as possible.
