Video: Role of an archaeologist

By Mark Newton on February 26, 2025

Paul Sharman, Orkney Islands Council

Paul talks about his role as the Orkney Islands Council’s Archaeologist. The remit is huge and ranges from helping pull together responses to the Sanday wreckage to finding where to bury 76 pilot whales; encouraging community archaeological and cultural heritage projects; giving input on the Orkney World Heritage Management Plan. Additionally he gives advice on the potential implications of changes in agricultural land use or a planning application on Orkney’s rich archaeological heritage.

Heart & Stone

2. Stories in Stone

How does a stone circle built in living memory become the stuff of legend for the community who watched it being laid?

In 1979 North Glasgow, a stone circle was dropped on Sighthill by helicopter for the whole community to see. These new, astronomically aligned stones sat on top of chemical waste and other debris in an area defined by the industrial boom and bust years.

Not only is it one of the most unlikely places you’d expect to see a stone circle, within just a few years it became revered as a place of magic and memorial, as a sacred place to escape to.

This is a story not just about urban regeneration but one of the power of imagination and the human need for meaningful connections to physical places.

There’s often an Orkney snap – this week, Nigel Heath caught some Orkney geese against a sunrise in Westray.
