From Whale and Dolphin Conservation….

Welcome to your February enews

We’re all part of this community because we share a deep appreciation for whales and dolphins, and this month, we’re bringing you some fascinating discoveries. One of the most exciting findings? Whales could live even longer than we thought - if we let them.

That’s right! New research suggests that industrial hunting of sperm, blue, fin and right whales has probably led us to underestimate their natural lifespans. Bowhead whales are known to live more than 200 years and were once thought to be the longest-living whales. But scientists now believe that other species may live just as long - if we humans leave them be. Imagine that - if undisturbed, some species could live for over two centuries!

We’re constantly learning new insights about these awesome beings, and the more we uncover about whales, dolphins and the ocean, the stronger our case becomes for protecting them. And because of your support, we’re working to restore the ocean to its former glory, free from whaling and other dangers so whales can live their long and remarkable lives as nature intended. Thank you so much.

That’s just one of the amazing discoveries this month, so dive in, and catch up on all the latest news from the world of whales and dolphins.

Groundbreaking research

Did you know that sperm whales produce the loudest sound of any living being? Just imagine if we could understand the deeper meanings behind their clicks. Scientists and tech experts are working to do just that.

Smuggled meat

It’s illegal to import whale products to Finland, yet 80,000 pounds of whale meat shipped from Norway has been found in dog food there. So how are they getting away with it? We’ll be sharing all in your next e-newsletter.

Growing cruelty

As much of the world moves away from captive entertainment, whale and dolphin captivity in China is rising. The country has now overtaken the US, with 22 orcas confined across 101 facilities, compared to 18 individuals in the three SeaWorld parks in the US.

Horrific news

Every year, we’re just as horrified when Norway announces its kill quota. But we’ve got big plans to help end this cruel industry for good. Stay tuned, our Norway for Whales campaigner, Lottie, will fill you in on everything in your next newsletter.

In memory

Donate to leave a tribute or share a memory on our online Pebble Beach in honour of lost family and friends. Celebrate their life by helping to protect the whales and dolphins they cared so much about.

Big news!

The UK has extended its Ivory Act to include orcas, narwhals and sperm whales. This means that trading ivory from these incredible beings is illegal and anyone caught dealing in whale teeth or narwhal tusks could face large fines or prison.

Show goes on

Madrid Zoo’s decision to end dolphin shows is a positive move for marine animal welfare. However, the dolphins will be sent to Ocean Paradise in Hainan, China where they’ll continue performing. With your support, we’re working tirelessly to end captivity forever.
