Food Glorious Food!......
I receive a regular Newsletter from Jeanne Bouza-Rose, Orkney artist. Jeanne’s most recent Newsletter includes something that appeals to my food-loving heart…..and also, I think it’s an unusual, interesting angle for an artist to approach life from – not too surprising with Jeanne!
I am working my way through 12 months of images that highlight foods from New York. I am using the watercolour whiteline print, or the Orkney Woodcut, which is a variation of the Provincetown Print technique. Having had a chance encounter with the woman who started 15 venues "A Taste of New York" supported by Cornell Cooperative Extension I now have a full winter project in pursuit.
Did you know that the state sandwich is pastrami on rye? Did you know that New York produces maple syrup and award winning wines? And that yes, Buffalo style chicken wings were created in Buffalo, NY, home to LOTS OF SNOW as well!”

From ‘Free Tibet’….
“We have a new opportunity to make a difference for Tibet’s children!
On 24 February 2025, the United Nations Human Rights Council will meet to begin their annual session.
With representatives from 47 countries in attendance, including China, we are joining Tibetans around the world in demanding that the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, raise the increasingly dire situation faced by Tibetan children.
Nearly one million Tibet children, including preschool-aged children, have been separated from their families, their culture, and their language, and have been forced into colonial boarding schools.
Facing rigorous political indoctrination, a falsified view of history, and the teaching that they are Chinese first and Tibetan second, these kids are being groomed by the Chinese Communist Party as a means to eradicate their Tibetan identity.
China has been orchestrating a crackdown on Tibetan schools, closing and demolishing those that are seen as a threat to the CCP narrative and which prioritise Tibetan language teaching. As a result, thousands of children have been left with no choice but to attend boarding schools away from their families and communities.
Before fleeing Tibet in 2020, Tibetan educator Dr Gyal Lo visited over 50 colonial boarding schools. Now, he has become an outspoken voice in pushing to have these schools investigated by independent actors, for what he describes as their “outright cruelty”.
“I saw in my own family how within three months of being sent to boarding preschool, children began to speak to each other only in Chinese, even though they had been raised speaking Tibetan. When the children went home on weekends, they stayed silent in the house, almost acting like guests.”
-Dr Gyal Lo
In the past, UN Special Rapporteurs have described how the system of shutting down Tibetan schools and forcing children into these colonial boarding schools violate the fundamental human rights of the Tibetan people.
With the next UN Human Rights Council meeting approaching, we are calling on Volker Türk to go further.
There needs to be an independent investigation into these schools, and the United Nations must have full and free access to see and understand the effect that such a system is having on Tibetan children.
Volker Türk must condemn the practice of colonial boarding schools in Tibet in the clearest possible terms, and demand immediate action.
As a supporter of Free Tibet, you can help us to achieve this goal by signing our petition to Volker Türk, which we are running in collaboration with International Tibet Network and Avaaz.
One day, Tibet will be free.
