generation after generation ::”
Before the invention of the mechanical clock, a “nick” was a small incision made in wood or stone used to indicate time, a ledger of sorts that tallied moments, hours, or days as they passed. In this poem, Evie Shockley sees the nick as both a marker of time, and a mark left by time—the memory of trauma, the score of violence. An embodied witness to this ongoing “unfreedom,” Evie shows that resilience and a will for reparation remain present across generations.”
