From ‘Free Tibet’….
“In December 2024, Tower Hamlets Council once again shot down China’s plans for a new ‘super embassy’ in the heart of London.
However, following a number of recent visits with Chinese officials, there have been media reports that the UK government is stepping in to intervene on China’s behalf.
China’s plans would see a new embassy, one of the largest in Europe, built on the site of the old Royal Mint Court near the Tower of London.
Historians have objected to the plans as it would reduce public access to historical sites and ruins. The police have objected to the plans as the area is unsuitable for large protests. And residents have objected to the plans, as it would bring disruption to their doorsteps, and because of the ethical implications of the project.
Despite this, the UK government is seeking to override the decision of Tower Hamlets’ democratically elected council, an informed decision based around the advice of experts and the desires of the local community.
This new embassy is a part of China’s particular modus operandi of investing in development and property in an attempt to cover for its human rights abuses against Tibetans, Uyghurs, Hong Kongers, and everyone living under the Chinese Communist Party’s rule.
That is why we are joining with communities from across the movement to stage a mass protest outside of the site on 8 February 2025. It promises to be a huge event, with scores of organisations coming together to make it happen. We would love it if you could join us.
We have held protests here each time Tower Hamlets Council has been debating this issue, but this time it’s different.
We need as many people as possible to show the UK government that we will not be overlooked. That the democratic will of the people cannot be so easily overturned by China’s promises of investment.
If you can, please join us on Saturday 8 February 2025 at 14:00 outside the Royal Mint Court in London.
Wrap up warm, bring your best chanting voices, and charge up your community spirit. This will be our first major action of 2025, and we are going to make it a big one!
Thank you for your continued support.
