We Saw A Jackdaw!....Walk On…..

by Bernie Bell - 09:25 on 27 December 2024

We Saw A Jackdaw!....

Roookie the Rook rules our bird table -  no other birds are allowed on or near it when he’s feeding.  They form an orderly queue….

He has a set way of feeding – he fills his beak/crop then flies away. The pigeons take their chance and descend on the bird table.  About 5 minutes later Roookie returns, and the pigeons scatter.

I was watching a big black bird on the bird table, thinking it was Roookie – but….though pigeons were getting very near, they only merited a passing glance….

And, the big black bird just stood there, feeding steadily, not flying back and forth as Roookie does.  I pointed this out to Mike, who told me it’s a Jackdaw!  We’ve never seen one in the garden before and are pleased to have another addition to the clan.  We’ve called him Mr. Rheims…

We’re chuffed.

Walk On….

From Robert MacFarlane’s Bluesky…

“On this (Boxing) day of walks, some good walking/access news: c. 40,000 miles of historic rights-of-way in England & Wales have been reprieved from deletion from the “definitive map” of such paths. Great work
