A spiritual ecology flows through the myths and poetry of ancient China. One needs only to look at the image of dragon or the ceaseless evocation of tao—that mysterious, generative tissue from which everything, everywhere emerges—to see a mystical framework that recognizes that we, like each of the ten thousand things, are infused with the same life force as the Earth Herself.
In this essay and six-poem sequence, acclaimed translator and poet David Hinton locates time as inseparable from this force, finding an uncannily literal translation of modern science’s “space-time” in yü chou—one of ancient China’s most foundational cosmological concepts. Inviting us to contemplate the fabric of time and space as a kind of primordial breath, he draws on the ideograms for yü chou to show that time is not a metaphysical river moving past, but an all-encompassing present that renders the Cosmos alive. An epilogue of poems delivers us into an elemental world where time is woven with the sacred, and all things—fire, light, wind; radishes, cottonwoods, and stars—are wondrous.”
