"Fossil fuel lobbyists outnumber delegations from almost every country at this year’s UN Climate Summit. At least 1,733 coal, oil and gas lobbyists have access to the climate talks, more than the 10 most climate-vulnerable countries combined.
We urgently need to transition away from fossil fuels and unequal societies if we want to live with dignity and in harmony with our planet – but this future is hanging in the balance.
Halfway through COP29, Global North countries are still refusing to pay up what they owe for the climate crisis, while pushing ‘false’ solutions to the climate crisis such as carbon offsetting – which enable them to keep polluting and profiting.

To keep the hope of a liveable planet alive – and to make a just transition possible – universal human rights must be upheld, war and destruction divested from, and international law respected. The UK must hold Israel to account for its genocide of the Palestinian people, and stop handing UK subsidies – taxpayer money – to fossil fuel polluters.
On Saturday, thousands of us took to the streets in the UK, and at COP29 in Baku, for the Global Day of Action for Climate Justice to say: invest in climate justice, not fossil fuels or Israel’s genocide.
Rich Global North governments, including the UK, owe a climate debt to Global South countries for causing the climate crisis, while growing rich from polluting industries. But at COP29, these rich governments are trying to bully Global South governments into accepting bad deals that don’t offer nearly enough money to fix the climate crisis.
Yet the money is there. As at the same time, rich Global North governments are pumping billions into arms and the military – and the UK is still transferring arms to Israel, arms that Israel is using in its genocide of the Palestinian people.
