From Kilmartin Museum….

“Online evening talks remain popular, and we have had a fascinating selection of speakers this year. Our latest talks were from Dr Fraser Hunter and Dr Alison Sheridan. Both of these – and many more – are available to view on our YouTube channel for free.  Our final evening talk of the year takes place on 21st November – and is on the subject of ‘Gaelic Tradition-Bearing’ by Àdhamh Ó Broin, Gaelic Culture Officer in Argyll and the Isles.  If you would like to suggest subjects or speakers for talks next year, please get in touch here.

We are looking forward to the upcoming workshops and installation of the continuation of the Carbon Legacy exhibition ‘Forest’ in November. See our website and social media pages for the opening times when they are announced.”

From ‘War On Want’…..

"For too long, rich Global North corporations and countries have pushed false ‘solutions’ to climate breakdown and biodiversity loss, like ‘offsetting’ carbon emissions by planting invasive tree species across vast plantations in the Global South – damaging biodiversity, breaking down ecosystems, and displacing local people.

Carbon ‘offsetting’ schemes are a scam, allowing more carbon to be released into the atmosphere, rather than kept in the ground. They are a licence to carry on polluting and carry on profiting – this is greenwashing.

Bernie, with the 2024 UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) starting in Colombia less than a week, will you demand the UK government rejects false ‘solutions’ to climate breakdown at COP16?

TAKE ACTION

When ecosystems collapse, it’s the poorest, mostly across the Global South, who are hardest hit by food shortages and climate disasters. Biodiversity isn’t just about saving species – it’s about social and ecological justice.

By pushing carbon offsetting schemes, and other false ‘solutions’ to the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, the UK is complicit in the ecological devastation inflicted on the Global South. We can’t let the UK government continue to hide behind false ‘solutions’.

Bernie – read our new article for more on insidious false 'solutions', and the actual answer to biodiversity loss.

READ ARTICLE

Instead of carbon offsetting, we need REAL solutions to biodiversity loss: an end to harmful extractive industries and guaranteed public investment in conservation to restore ecosystems and repair the damage caused by centuries of exploitation of the Global South. Real solutions must be led by Indigenous communities and support climate resilience.

The UK must reject false ‘solutions’ and provide finance for biodiversity protection, while recognising the rights of Indigenous peoples on the frontlines of the climate crisis.

There is no more time to waste. The destruction of our ecosystems must end. Will you take a stand and tell the UK government: no more ‘false solutions’ for the climate crisis?
