From ‘Emergence’ Magazine…..
"There Is No Show More Beautiful Than This
“I wondered if they could hear us applauding, if they could feel our devotion.”
Every autumn, hundreds of thousands of tiny Vaux’s swifts migrate from their nesting grounds as far north as British Columbia to their overwintering homes in Mexico and South America. Catching sight of their flight in September skies has long been a fall ritual in Portland, Oregon, but in recent decades the migration has begun increasingly earlier, and with fewer numbers. Witnessing the swifts’ annual stopover at Chapman Elementary School, a community gathers to watch them congregate at their biggest roosting site: the building’s three-story brick chimney. Drawn to their arrival here year after year, writer Tove Danovich finds joy amid uncertainty through the promise of their eventual return."
