John Rae Society News….
In this talk, Captain Maiwenn Beadle will tell of what the North-West Passage is like now and what it would have been like in John Rae's time.
She is very kindly donating the proceeds from this to fundraising for the Hall of Clestrain.

Covid…..
Because I am old and manky – I get a Covid jab. When everyone did – Mike did. Last year he was told that he couldn’t have one. He pointed out that if he catches it – that puts me at risk and also makes life harder for me as I have little energy to spare for taking care of him. But the answer was still ‘no’.
After successfully avoiding Covid for 4 years, last March he caught it. Fortunately, he wasn’t seriously ill – like a bad flu for two weeks. I managed - thank goodness for good neighbours.
It’s still here and everyone should still be offered the jab. It doesn’t stop you catching it, but does lessen the effects.
From Kilmorack Gallery…
“Leaves are falling outside, the fire is glowing and the gallery is brim full of wonderful things. The roads are quieter too, so it is a good time to visit Kilmorack. We love Anthony Scullion's new work which is just back from the framers and is now hanging. They are a masterclass in paint handling and the quiet understanding of being.
We also have Helen Denerley's latest work: a dairy cow, a sitting girl, a lurcher and more - which can be seen above. Denerley's work shows what can be achieved with many years devoted to nature, a welder and a scrap pile, and an unsurpassed eye for line.
Other exhibitions include paintings of Orkney's Hoy and Harris by Jane MacNeill and new work by Peter White. These will soon be joined by Colin Brown's latest collaged paintings. This time, Brown has been inspired by prints from Edo Japan and these miniature works are wonderful. They should arrive next week.
Our extensive vaults and exhibitions can also be accessed through collections on the gallery's website, and they are worth delving into.
And lastly, we updated our 3d tour last week so you can wander our space virtually. We will update this again when Colin Brown's work arrives next week.

Latest Exhibitions
Anthony Scullion
5 - 31 October
There is a silent voice that only paint can offer, and the figures Anthony Scullion paints sing with this. He is is a master of nuance – raising the colour and subtleties of paint and line to a fresh plateau. These latest thirteen paintings do not disappoint. They combine this knowledge, with Scullion’s sensitive and poetic look at humanity, and they make us look at the world with a rekindled passion.
Helen Denerley | a cow, a girl and a dog
27 September - 31 October
Few sculptors bring so much life to the inanimate, but Denerley does this repeatedly, ascending unbending scrap, what we have thrown away, into new life.
This exhibition unveils Denerley's latest works - a dairy cow, a standing man and a sitting girl, birds and dogs and, for the non-arachnophobic, there are spiders too.
Jane MacNeill
17 September - 19 October
Orkney's Hoy has been part of people's consciousness since Neolithic times, as it has been part of Jane MacNeill's for as long as she can remember. In these eight paintings, MacNeill explores the island, its stone and sky, and the deep silent water which surrounds it.
Peter White
17 September - 19 October
Peter White's subject is often a lone object - a book, bowl or flower. Somehow White makes us feel that these objects have felt the presence of life, that they have born witness to something special. White is one of the few painters in the UK that can transport us so far with so little. We have seven new works.
October Selection
1 October - 31 October
Autumn can be the most beautiful time of the year in Kilmorack. Colours intensify before a frost or a strong wind winter the world. Inside the gallery, there is a fire and art to warm you. Here are some works currently on our walls.
