The People Of the Ness……The Ness Sleeps…. From Kilmorack Gallery….

by Bernie Bell - 07:43 on 27 September 2024

The People Of the Ness……

Through this year’s final dig at The Ness of Brodgar, one of the Artists in Residence -  Jeanne Bouza-Rose -  has been doing sketches of the people as well as the structures.  These quick impressions appealed to me as they ‘catch’ the people, and the moment.

With Jeanne’s permission, I’ve copied a couple of them from her Newsletter….

Rachel Looks so Tall

Over in Trench J at the Ness, there was a furious amount of final sampling, digging and recording.  They knew that there work was going to be covered first.  Remember, days after the site closed to the public, the diggers were on site and starting to shift the spoil heaps back into the trencheshttps://www.nessofbrodgar.co.u...

Alice Just Looks...

Alice was the Supervisor for what once was Structure 8 but as the digging continued, reflected more structures.  At the far end, a huge drain was discovered.  Numerous interesting finds came from this area and Ceriwiden, seemed to find most of them! By the final days, I believe there was talk that the huge drain might be an entrance to another older structure.  Well, if you want to know more, follow the Ness at https://www.nessofbrodgar.co.u.. While I’m on the subject to Jeanne’s paintings – she’s produced a calendar of Orkney Standing Stones - Christmas pressies?….

 The Ness Sleeps

The Ness sleeps

Under earth

Under sky

Between Lochs.

Grass will come

Flowers will come

To form a blanket

Keeping it safe.

Knowing folk will come

To break its slumber

What might they

Uncover?

From Kilmorack Gallery….

“It's a great privilege to received Helen Denerley's latest sculptures. These include a life-sized dairy cow, Standing Man and Sitting girl, as well as dogs, birds and chess tables and chairs. We hope you can make it to sit in her comfortable seats and ponder the delicacy of a cow's foot. Her work is on exhibition until November.

Other exhibitions include paintings of Orkney's Hoy by Jane MacNeill and new work by Peter White and other artists. These will soon be joined by Colin Brown's latest collaged paintings. This time, Brown has been inspired by prints from Japan and these miniature works are wonderful. Soon, Anthony Scullion's powerful drawings and paintings and new work by Ann Oram and Janette Kerr will join these.

Our extensive vaults and exhibitions can also be accessed through 'collections' on the gallery's website, so I have included a few introductory links below.

And lastly, we have just updated our 3d tour so you can wander our space virtually.

Latest Exhibitions

Helen Denerley | a cow, a girl and a dog

27 September - 31 October

Few sculptors bring so much life to the inanimate, but Denerley does this repeatedly, ascending unbending scrap, what we have thrown away, into new life.

This exhibition unveils Denerley's latest works - a dairy cow, a standing man and a sitting girl, birds and dogs and, for the non-arachnophobic, there are spiders too.

Jane MacNeill

17 September - 19 October

The looming presence of Orkney's Hoy has been part of people's consciousness since Neolithic times, as it has been part of Jane MacNeill's for as long as she can remember. In these eight paintings, MacNeill explores the island, its stone and sky, and the deep silent water which surrounds it.

Peter White

17 September - 19 October

Peter White's subject is often a lone object - a book, bowl or flower. Somehow White makes us feel that these objects have felt the presence of life, that they have born witness to something special. White is one of the few painters in the UK that can transport us so far with so little. We have seven new works.
