‘Babe’….

Yesterday evening we watched ‘Babe’ again and, along with the humour and magic,  I was reminded of the themes of prejudice and entrenched opinions which prompted me to write this piece in 2019…

Since then, attitudes haven’t got any better in Britain.

Maybe it’s finally time for change .

From ‘Free Tibet’….

“It’s time to keep pressure on the Kamtok Dam!

Over the past few months, we have shared worrying information about the Kamtok Dam, which threatens to flood villages and monasteries in eastern Tibet. We have also shared ways that you can get involved to stop it.

We are thrilled to report that there has been a big development.

Read the story

On Friday, the United Nations published a letter sent by a group of 13 Special Rapporteurs to the Chinese government and China Huadian, the state-owned company behind the Kamtok Dam.

In the letter, the experts raised alarm over the irreversible destruction of important cultural and religious sites should the dam go ahead, as well as the “dire and irreversible environmental and climate impact” that it would have.

The UN letter was sent back in July, following information supplied by Tibet groups, including Free Tibet. The 60-day deadline for the Chinese government to reply has now lapsed, prompting the UN experts to make the letter public.

As well as highlighting the damage the Kamtok Dam will cause, and noting that Tibetans “do not appear to have been consulted in a meaningful way about the project, the experts raised the harsh response against Tibetans who protested against it,

The violence perpetrated by police on peaceful protesters back in February 2024 included hundreds of arbitrary arrests and beatings. While most of the protesters have been released, some still appear to be in detention.

The Kamtok Dam, which is due to be constructed along the Drichu River , would see thousands of Tibetans in Dege and Jomda County displaced, at least six ancient monasteries destroyed, and the local environment devastated, with negative effects downriver too.

With your help, Free Tibet and its allies have focused scrutiny onto China Huadian, the company that is to build the Kamtok Dam. This company is the key to halting this dam.

It’s time to raise the pressure. The United Nations recognises the devastating impact of the Kamtok Dam, so why don’t China Huadian’s investors and partners? Siemens Energy, Credit Agricole, and Schroeders all need to back away from China Huadian and its reckless dam project.

Thank you for your continued support.

P.S. Did you see the Moratorium on Tibet we shared last month? Tibetans around the world oppose this dam. We need to stand with them.”
