The Ness Of Brodgar…. From ‘Wild Justice’….A FREE BOOK!....

The Ness Of Brodgar….

Yesterday morning dawned beautifully sunny again, and I was wittering at Mike about how, after a dodgy start, the weather hasn’t been too bad for the archaeology digs this year.  The Diggers aren’t too keen on bright sunshine - makes fine things hard to see – but rain can simply stop play – so – sunshine is the better of the two.  What they really like is a nice, dull, overcast day.  Failing that – sunshine will do.

Anyway – I was then wittering about how it’s nearly the first of August, and how that will mark  something for the archaeologists at The Ness of Brodgar, as the dig finishes on the 26th – finishes for good. The first of the month could feel like a bit of a death- knell.  I was saying how the Ness just keeps on giving – they’re still finding evidence of structures,  interesting placing of large stone etc.  Whatever was under Structure 5, takes the date of activity at The Ness even further back in time.  Trench T is still a huge mystery – which  won’t be solved in our life-time – unless something truly spectacular turns up the next couple of weeks.  And the ‘slow-cookers’ in Structure 12.

All these bits & pieces are adding to the story of, not only The Ness, but the Neolithic in Britain, and beynd.  It’s hard for them to call it a day – but – needs must.  And now, to the dig diary…

The replica axe is ….well, look at it. And, while looking at axes….

Attention has returned to the  big drain, first discovered in 2019.  Drains – matter….…

Thoughts about the drain, discovered at the Ness

    It's not just Sky-stones,
    Carved Balls,
    Painted Walls.

    It's the basics of life.

    Making, Breaking.
The fragments which can say so much,
    To those who pay attention.

    Butchery - How?
    Placement - Why?
Careful noting of the smallest detail,
    Builds the picture.

    The beauty, matters.
    Beauty, simply, does.

"Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or
believe to be beautiful."

The principle, works down the ages.

    Beauty, mystery, and.....practicality.

    LIFE.

From ‘Wild Justice’….

“Today’s newsletter provides some news of our potential challenge of overgrazing on Dartmoor, a weekend workshop in which we are participating, a reminder of Hen Harrier Action’s event on 10 August, two petitions we think you might want to support and the news you have all been awaiting - we have filed our accounts for the last Financial Year.

Wild Justice and over-grazing of Dartmoor: we told you of this legal challenge just over a week ago in the last newsletter. We notice that there is a meeting of the Dartmoor Commoners' Council tomorrow, Wednesday, evening at the Two Bridges Hotel, Princetown at 19:30 - click here.  Our legal challenge is Item 7. If you live nearby and feel like dropping in on this public meeting we'd be interested to learn what is said.

Our lawyers' press release about our challenge is here.

Join us on a Wild Service in Action workshop: Wild Justice is teaming up with a group of organisations to deliver a Wild Service in Action workshop in Leicestershire on the weekend of the 31 August and 1 September 2024. The weekend is for grassroots groups, organisations and individuals who are already making changes for the nature around them, or who are keen to get started.

The workshops will be spread over two days, and will include skills-sharing and collaboration between different organisations working in the environment including us, River Action, Trash Free Trails, Lawyers for Nature, Access Friendly Farmers Network, and Right to Roam. Wild Justice will be delivering a workshop called: Raptor Persecution: what is it, how to spot it and what action to take when you do.

We’ve been asked to invite a small number of participants to join us – those of you who are keen to get more involved in local environmental and wildlife campaigning. The event is free to attend and will be quite informal, with attendees camping at the location of the workshops. We’re putting the invite out to you – our supporters. If it sounds like your sort of thing, you can find out more about logistics, facilities and what the weekend involves by clicking here. If you’re interested in coming, please fill out the form – we’ll be selecting attendees at random.

Hen Harrier Action’s ‘Action for Wildlife Day 2024’ on 10 August: reminder - this free event is taking place at Carsington Water in Derbyshire, and will include lots of speakers talking about Hen Harrier and raptor persecution and wildlife issues, music and performances.
All three of us – Chris, Ruth and Mark – will be there. We’ll be attending with a Wild Justice stand (and some of our team), speaking on stage and signing books. Come and say hello! Information about the event - click here.

Please consider these two petitions:

  • The Pesticide Action Network and others launched a petition on Sunday calling for a ban on the use of harmful pesticides in urban areas. Wild Justice has done some studies on pesticide levels in human urine (click here for details on our blog) and we invite you to sign the petition which stands on 2199 signatures as we send out this newsletter - click here. We're sure that your support can make a lot of difference.
  • The Metropolitan Police have said they'll close their wildlife crime unit. Please consider signing this petition to tell them you think it's a bad idea to axe the unit. Many of you signed this last week - but we know this is holiday time so you may have been sitting on a beach rather than signing petitions.

Our accounts: Wild Justice is not a charity, we are a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, so we have to file our annual accounts with Companies House each year. We've recently done that for the Financial Year ending 31 October 2023 - click here. Last year we spent more than we raised - which is good because we aim to make your money work for wildlife. With three months to go, this year we'll probably end up making a 'profit' but time will tell.

That's it for now - we'll be back in touch soon with more!

Thank you,

Wild Justice (Directors: Mark Avery, Chris Packham and Ruth Tingay).”
