From ‘Freedom From Torture’….
“A lot has changed in the last few weeks. We have a new government and we're starting to see big changes.
Over the last few years, you've been a huge part of our people-powered campaigning work - signing petitions, emailing your MP to fight for the right or torture survivors and joining the call for a compassionate UK asylum system.
With more news breaking, each win is proof of what can be achieved when we all work together.
Big Wins this month:
Rwanda Scheme Scrapped
On the anniversary of the first scheduled Rwanda flight, no planes have left the tarmac! We're celebrating the scheme being "dead and buried", and using this momentum to continue the fight.
Bibby Stockholm Closure
The government have confirmed that the prison-like barge will close in January 2025. We celebrate this news and will continue to fight against torture survivors being housed in unsafe conditions.
Refugee Ban Lifted!
Since March 2023, thousands of people, including torture survivors, have been kept in a distressing limbo - their asylum claims paused. The new government has now lifted this ban, allowing asylum claims to be heard again. This is a huge win which will have an immediate impact for many of our clients!
The Refugee Olympic Team
It’s already been a summer of sport and with the 2024 Paris Olympics due to open this week, it’s not stopping anytime soon.
The IOC Refugee Olympic Team is made up of 37 athletes, representing over 100 million people who have been forcibly displaced across the globe. Together, the team send a message of hope, resilience and compassion - we hope you’ll join us in cheering them on!
If you’re inspired by their grit and determination, why not take on your own sporting challenge? Browse our events, sign-up to a challenge and fundraise to support survivors rebuild their lives in the UK.
