The bones of a young dog? Could be purposely placed there - or….could be a little dog who went down a hole and got stuck.
Years ago, when we lived in Suffolk, a neighbour told us that their little Jack Russell dog had been missing for a few weeks – his children were distraught. Mike dowsed over a map and located where the dog was. This dowsing placed the dog in an area which was riddled with rabbit holes. It looked like the dog had gone down a hole and got stuck. There was no chance that it would still be alive, and our neighbour decided not to try to excavate. He explained the situation to his children – who felt better for knowing what had happened to the dog as there had been a spate of dog-thefts in the area – some of which were suspected to have been taken to take part in dog fights. They at least knew the fate of their little terrier – and he did die doing one of the things he liked most – rabbiting.
The young dog at The Ness might turn out to be a Neolithic dog – but it still might have gone down the drain and got stuck – as dogs do.

Serving the finest food from Orkney's seas
The waters around Orkney are home to some of the finest seafood to be found anywhere in the world, and the latest food business in the islands is placing it all right at the heart of its menu. At the Loki Seafood Shack, based at Skaill House, you can expect fresh lobster, langoustines, cockles, crab and more. The food comes in various guises too – from beer-battered scallops with Thai jam, to griddled monkfish with chorizo and mango salsa. It opened in April and word is definitely spreading, so make sure you visit this summer and get a real taste of Orkney.
New products from Orkney
For Orkney’s creative community, summer is all about welcoming visitors from around the world into galleries, studios, and shops. The Creative Orkney Trail showcases our craft makers and the incredible range of talent found across the islands. Meanwhile, Orkney’s innovative food and drink producers make sure shelves and kitchens are well-stocked with the finest local delicacies. And amongst it all, they still find time to create new pieces and products for us to enjoy. We’ve highlighted some of our favourite items from our makers that are available to buy locally and online now.
Take a stroll through Stromness
If you’re visiting Orkney this summer, a walk through the streets of Stromness should definitely be on your itinerary. But if you want to discover some of the secrets of this historic harbour town then booking a space on one of the new Stromness Strolls is highly recommended. The guided walks will be held once a month until September, offering visitors the chance to explore Stromness in the company of a local guide. The route begins at the harbour and includes stops at the Pier Arts Centre and the Stromness Museum, with in-depth tours of each collection included.
From sheep festivals to archaeological open days, the eclectic Orkney events calendar always comes to life in the summer.
Orkney wildlife photographer, Raymond Besant, has been island hopping this month, visiting a real seabird success story in our north isles.
