The Scott Monument - Plus…..
I regularly post poetry by my chum Bartholomew Barker, in m’blog. Bart. is presently visiting Scotland and posted a piece about his visit to the Scott Monument in his blog – so I thought I’d share it here…

On Friday evening he arrived in Stromness and went to check-in at a ‘Guest House’ (re-named from ‘Hotel’) in Kirkwall where he has booked a room for his weeks stay in Orkney. But …..there was no check-in – no reception. There was a row of boxes on the wall, containing room keys. He’d been given a code to open a box to access the key to his room and that – was that!
Fortunately, we’re here to advise on where to go and how to get there and, for now, there’s the Tourist Information Centre. But – that used to be part of the role of the person on Reception in an hotel – to advise & recommend – even Fawlty Towers provided that service!
For that matter, Fawlty Towers wouldn’t have been written if not for John Cleese & Connie Booth’s contact with a grouchy Hotel owner – and look at all the enjoyment that’s provided over the decades!
I was aware that some big hotels have converted to the ‘non-human’ approach, but wasn’t aware that it had crept into Orkney. Not a good development – ‘Welcome to Orkney’?
Bart. is the kind of visitor that Orkney needs – someone staying here, contributing to the economy. I’m re-assuring him that Orkney is welcoming and hoping that he finds the rest of his stay to be so.
