The Spectral Hand…...The Cairns…..From ‘Whale & Dolphin Conservation’…

The Spectral Hand…..

The double glazing had gone on one of our windows – it was so misted up that we couldn’t see out of it - so we ‘bit the bullet’ and ordered a replacement - which duly arrived and suddenly we could see out of the window again!

This did mean that we lost the Spectral Hand.  In certain weather conditions a hand-print would appear, outlined on the glass….

We presumed that it was from when it was originally installed and it didn’t bother us – we just thought it was interesting

I told our neighbour about it and he didn’t like it at all as it reminded him of years ago when he worked in a pub, and on a window in that pub there was the print of a hand which was said to have been left by a woman who perished in a fire there, as she was trying to get out.

He never liked being in the pub alone.

Our spectral hand reminded him of that other spectral hand, which freaked him out.  So much so that he asked me to never mention it again.

I don’t know whether he reads my blog or not….

From ‘Whale & Dolphin Conservation’…

"The ocean covers almost three quarters of our blue planet and is home to an incredible abundance of life, including most of the 90 or so species of whales, dolphins and porpoises.

But for all its beauty, the ocean can be a dangerous place for whales and dolphins, and to save them, we need to protect their home.

Their biggest threat : Entanglement.

Hundreds of thousands whales, dolphins and porpoises die in nets or get tangled up in fishing gear every year. As air-breathing mammals like us, when they get trapped in a net, panic can take over and they can sustain terrible injuries before either escaping, or suffocating.

What are we doing for the ocean?

We're already running projects to reduce entanglement of: humpback and minke whales in Scotland, Harbour porpoises in the Central Baltic Sea, North Atlantic right whales in the UC and Indo-Pacific finless porpoises in Hong Kong

By working with creel fishers to trial new fishing gear. By developing a recovery plan for this cricitally endangered population. By working with fishers to trial alternative gear types. By supporting the local community and fishers to save the remaining 200 individuals.

What can you do for the ocean?

We hope to collaborate with Sri Lankan artisanal tuna fisheries that use gillnets to trial new gear types and reduce the impact their fishing has on marine life. By purchasing a game in our World Ocean Day Steam Sale you will enable us continue these vital conservation projects, as well as embark on new ones.
