Maps……Something’s Gotta Change….

Maps……

A map is A GOOD THING!

On Tuesday we went to the Hatston Industrial Estate, Kirkwall, mainly to get me a new waterproof coat and a handle for the toilet cistern which we’d temporarily replaced with a monkey-wrench – functional, but far from ideal!

The Hatston Estate is A GOOD THING – just about any kind of functional, practical thing you need can be found there.  We’ve been to Birsay Farmers many times, but can never find it!  Mike had a brain-wave,  ‘Googled’ and printed out a map of the Hatston Estate which showed what the different outlets sell.   We took this with us, found Birsay Farmers no problem and I got an excellent waterproof, windproof, breathable coat with lots of pockets.  I like to have pockets for my ‘finds’.

Then we tried one Plumber’s suppliers, but we would have had to order a handle and we needed one asap. The helpful lass said to try William Wilson’s, so we drove as directed – could see the building, but couldn’t find an entrance.  Eventually we worked out that -  by driving right along to the end of the road, turning left, then driving back again – we’d get there.  We did so – got a handle – mission accomplished.

We were talking of how the map had been a boon but that, even with a map, the Hatston Estate is still something like a Medieval City, with its maze of roads, by-roads, dead-ends, angles and corners in unlikely places.

Industrial Estates are usually more formal in plan – laid out along ancient Roman lines.

Which do I prefer?  For efficiency - the Roman grid-pattern.  For the human touch - a bit of jumbleiness.

I suppose the solution is….. jumble, with a map!

And there, in among it all is a mound dating from the Iron Age, the Grain Earth House….

This may have been part of a ’map’ of ancient Orkney – a place marker for the people of that time.  It’s good that it has survived the development of the Industrial Estate.  Where exactly is it?  I can’t possibly tell you!
