A Dearth Of Frogs?…..Have You Heard The One About…..From Kilmorack Gallery…..

A Dearth Of Frogs?…..

Usually, at this time of year the pond in our garden is heaving with frogs mating and spawning.  A few weeks ago when Colin was strimming the meadow for us he had to avoid numerous frogs. Then, when Mike started to move the heaps of grass cuttings so’s they could go to our neighbour’s pigs, he kept finding frogs – a couple of huge ones, heavy with spawn, which he put in the pond.

Kraak the Heron was there every day, waiting patiently…….

Then, one day we came across this in the grass……..

I posted a pic on the Orkney Wildlife Facebook page….

……asking for ideas about what it might be. The general, and most likely, opinion was that it was frogspawn which hadn’t been ‘amalgamated’ and that an otter had spat it out, as they don’t like it.

Since then – no Kraak – no frogs in the pond, no sign of spawn. We wondered if an otter is hunting our pond and gobbing all the frogs?  If so, it’s welcome  – a bit of a mystery though - and a bit hard on Kraak!

Stop the press!!!! HURRAH!   Tuesday morning…a  clump of healthy frogspawn….

Hopefully the alleged otter won’t eat it!

From Kilmorack Gallery….

“House of Macdonald

16th March - 13th April 2024

You and your guests are invited to the preview of Kilmorack Gallery’s next exhibition – HOUSE OF MACDONALD – on Friday 15th March, 6 – 8pm. Alan, Carolynda and Rory have shared not only a single roof for many years, but also the family trait of irrepressible curiosity and meticulous technique. Each Macdonald voice is distinctive, opening different doors to where paint can take you and a personal response to the universal. It will be a stunning exhibition.

It continues until the 13th April and catalogues for each artist are available.

We hope you can make it but, if not, all work and more information is viewable online.
