Orkney Needs An Abattoir….Bluetooth….Psychogeography…

Orkney Needs An Abattoir….

Recent weather conditions have meant repeated cancellations of ferries – leading to some shortages of food on Supermarket shelves.  This has highlighted the need for an abattoir in Orkney – there is plenty of meat here ‘on the hoof’ – but the animals have to be transported to Mainland Scotland to an abattoir,  then brought back again.  It’s a silly enough situation, and the weather conditions/ferry cancellations have underlined how unsustainable this situation is.

Erratic weather patterns are likely to get more pronounced, and frequent, in the near future and the time has come when it’s imperative for Orkney to have an abattoir.

Rather than ramble on further,  I’ll re-post something I wrote some years ago…

….and ask OIC, and it’s new Leader, whoever that might be, to THINK ON!

Bluetooth….

Not quite Orkney – but near enough…

I’ve copied this from Matthew Manning’s Facebook page…

BLUETOOTH: THE VIKING KING WHOSE NAME IS PART OF OUR LIVES

We are all using Bluetooth connections whether we’re at home, in our cars, or out and about. We take for granted its significance and how much it impacts our lives. From smartphones to headphones and beyond, we rely on Bluetooth technology to free us from the tether of wired tech.

Bluetooth is not an acronym and doesn’t stand for anything, so what does it mean?

Surprisingly, the name dates back more than a millennia to King Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson who was known for two things: uniting Denmark and Norway in 958, and his dead tooth, which was a dark blue/grey colour and earned him the nickname Bluetooth.

In 1996, the industry leaders - Intel, Ericsson, and Nokia - met to plan the standardisation of this short-range radio system to support connectivity and collaboration between different products and industries.

During this meeting, Jim Kardach from Intel suggested Bluetooth as a temporary code name. He was later quoted as saying, “King Harald Bluetooth was famous for uniting Scandinavia just as we intended to unite the PC and cellular industries with a short-range wireless link.”

Bluetooth was only intended as a temporary name until marketing could come up with something better.

Later, when it became time to select a serious name, Bluetooth was to be replaced with either RadioWire or PAN (Personal Area Networking). PAN was the front runner, but an exhaustive search discovered it already had tens of millions of hits throughout the internet.

A full trademark search on RadioWire couldn’t be completed in time for launch, making Bluetooth the only choice. The name caught on fast and before it could be changed, it spread through the industry, becoming synonymous with short-range wireless technology.

King Harald would undoubtedly have been impressed that more than a thousand years after his death, his name and tooth live on!”

Psychogeography…..

I saw this on the FB page of my old chum Ian Marchant…….

…and commented….

“I didn't know what psychogeograpy is...looked it up...."Psychogeography describes the effect of a geographical location on the emotions and behaviour of individuals".....and can see why Ian would be a source of info - connects with the content of 'One Fine Day' ……http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=16286

Now, I'm thinking about how island life affects how people are..... .....hmmmm.  And - living in the North – fighting the cold a lot of the time…..hmmmmm. Food for thought.

Just remembered this..... https://theorkneynews.scot/2019/08/26/solastalgia/ I'll go away now - and think on....”
