A Skull For Valentine’s?….

A Skull For Valentine’s?….

This might seem a bit odd….OK….. it is odd – when did that ever stop me?

I recently came across a suggestion that for Valentine’s Day rather than be given a heart-shaped box of chocolates, some folk would prefer to be given an interesting skull…..

I understand this preference, and also like to either find or be given rusty bits of metal and gnarly bits of wood.

We have quite a few skulls scattered around and in our house, so I thought I’d trawl through my folders and put together a compilation of skull photos, sometimes with the tale of their finding.

Maybe a bit of a niche item – but might be of interest to my fellow skull-enthusiasts.  Here goes……

A North Ronaldsay sheep skull, from the Auskerry flock, provides a winter home for a couple of big, fat snails...

Rerwick re-visited….

...and we found what we think is a Porpoise skull?

PS.... I'm reliably informed that ...."If you have any of the teeth, they will be a distinct paddle-shape that is diagnostic of a porpoise… or distinctly pointy if a dolphin."

A big bull-seal’s skull picked up on the Copinsay shore -  now nearly over-grown by Alchemilla…..

A smaller seal skull – with teeth! – also being over-grown…

Bird skulls on the bookcase…

Mike brought this skull back when he went ‘over the hills and far away’…..

Don’t know what it is – can’t remember where in Orkney – didn’t bring it home because it was too smelly!

Not one we brought home –  the whale skull which used to stand near the Brough of Birsay……

………and inside it……….

Not ours either, but can’t resist…

– here’s an explanation of how I came to take those pics….

A Pterodactyl at Rose Ness?…

And finally – how often do you get to see an Iron Age Otter Skull?....
