Firth Community Park…...

Firth Community Park…...

We’ve been meaning  to have a look round the Firth Community Park in Finstown but never got round to it - possibly because it’s so close to home.

It was a fine day - after days of grim weather, stuck indoors - we wanted an airing - so we parked in the main car park by the shore and walked along the road, round the back of the church, through the gate, across the church car park, to enter the Park.

Turning to the left we crossed a little bridge over the burn……

…and followed the path.  We were surprised to see Mahonia flowering – it is an evergreen - but flowering, in January?

Thoughtfully placed benches gave a view over the central area of the Park, provided a different perspective on Finstown and a view across to Wideford Hill…...

By another seating area, a gloriously glowing Dog-wood…..

….a splash of colour in the bleak mid-winter.

I’m not sure what it is – maybe an Alder?  I like the shape…

Mike took some close-ups of cones....

.....& catkins…….

This tree is part of a small woodland area with grassy paths weaving through it……

I see faces in everything…..remember the Mahna Mahna song from ‘The Muppets’?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N_tupPBtWQ

Do you see it?

Through a stone arch…..

…to the central area of the Park which contains a carved stone telling of how and when the Park came to be……

The Park is an asset to Finstown.  It must have taken a lot of thought to plan it and a lot of work to plant it up and maintain it.  We mean to return in the Spring to see the new growth on the trees and shrubs, then in Summer to see the flowers.  A Park for all seasons.

We’d hoped to get burgers at Leigh’s van in the Finstown car park – but it wasn’t open so we went into Stromness and ate at ‘Adam’s Place’ for the first time since it stopped being ‘Julia’s…….

…….and we very much enjoyed our lunch!  I had a bean-burger (home-made) with proper chips – not fries – chips.  I told the waiter …”We’ll be back.”
