Moss……Some Positive News…… From ‘Emergence’ Magazine….

by Bernie Bell - 08:10 on 22 January 2024

Moss……

On Saturday evening we watched a programme we’d recorded  (I’m resisting the inclination to say ‘taped’) about Moss, which was very good indeed….…

Then, Sunday, as part of his ‘In the Garden’ series Mike took a photo of a little clump of moss on the concrete in front of our house….

A few years ago I put some fishing floats next to an old sink in the garden, one with a bit of rope coming from it, and moss….arrived……

I likes moss.

Desert, Fire, and Flood

by Zied Ben Romdhane

“In the same year, I have seen drought, famine in Niger, and fire in Tunisia, and this in Canada.… It’s all there right before our eyes.”

Grain by grain, sand dunes are shifting across the landscapes of southern Tunisia, filling and burying the roads, crops, dams, and towns that lie in their path. In the country’s north, high summertime winds are combining with climbing temperatures—the latest record is 50.3°C—to bring a sharp increase in seasonal wildfire. At the same time, intensifying meteorological extremes have brought destructive fires to British Columbia, followed by devastating flooding in scorched areas of the province.

Based between Tunisia and Montreal, photographer Zied Ben Romdhane has trained his focus on these accelerating natural disasters in the two countries he calls home, conjuring both the overwhelming animacy of Earth’s rupturing landscapes and the dignified struggle of those trying to survive within them. Presented at our recent Shifting Landscapes exhibition in London, this striking black-and-white series demonstrates the inescapable power of the elements to shape and disrupt human life.“
