The Small Red Dot…..The Ness…..Fireworks……

The Small Red Dot…

Thinking again about the intense red dot in many of Vernon Bradley’s recent works…

…..the blood-red Aten which looks to me like a drop of blood on the canvas.

I don’t know if this was Vernon’s intention – but it’s what it presents to me.

Interpretation of and reaction to art is very personal, and the red dot links with blood, life and sun in my mind.

Though it has to be said, my mind is a strange place these days.

Blood holds so much of life, and the sun produces so much of life.

At this time of year we get a lot of vivid sun-rises and sun-sets – blood red.  Coming up to the shortest day, when the sun shines into Maes Howe and other structures to mark the return of life to the world…..

And I’m thinking of the pale blue dot - the earth, which Carl Sagan noted…..

A drop of life, in space.

And - drops of water and of light….

Basics of life.

Fireworks…

The petition re. the Peedie Sea bonfire & fireworks is doing well…

Sunday evening it sounded like there was a war on out there – and we live out in the sticks!  That’s another aspect of the problems caused by noisy fireworks - Mike’s Dad served in the army during the Second World War.  He was a man of courage, not only in his military career, but also in his domestic life.  He passed  a few years ago, aged 97.

He didn’t like Bonfire Night. The ordinary fireworks made him jump, and those loud ones really are like an explosion – because - that’s what they are!

I like to see fireworks, the colourful ones,  but they are getting louder and louder. Many of them are just a big BANG!  with no real ‘show’ to them at all.

I don’t want to be a kill-joy, but – in my view, fireworks need to be strictly controlled, and confined to specific displays in places well away from, well, just about everything!

I don’t really see the point at all, as mentioned here….
