‘A Brain Dump’….

Jackie describes this as being  “…more of a brain dump than a blog post…”

Times They Are A‘ Changin’….

Recently, I was puzzled by something, then said that…. ‘the penny dropped’ and wondered, do young people recognize where that saying comes from?  Public toilets, back when you put a penny in a slot in a mechanism in the door – then the penny dropped, allowing the door to open.

And – ‘Taking coals to Newcastle’ meaning taking something to a place which has a lot of it already ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coals_to_Newcastle#:~:text=It%20refers%20to%20the%20fact,than%20anywhere%20else%20in%20Britain

Newcastle no longer equates with coal – more likely ‘Geordie Shore’!

Say someone describes someone as having a certain characteristic, for example – ‘She’s very vain’ and the speaker is vain themself – that can be described as … ‘The pot calling the kettle black’.  Will younger folk know that this refers to when pot, kettle and skillet were used to cook over an open fire?

Kirbister Farm Museum has an example – which is why such places matter - to keep recent history alive….

Also, a row of cooking pots at the Fossil & Heritage Centre, Burray….

Mike and I were wondering if people still get those little boxes containing a small selection of modest fireworks – a Roman Candle, a Catharine wheel, Jumping Jacks ( Health & Safety nightmare!), a smaaaall Rocket and some Sparklers?  I said that probably, today, youngsters would consider that to be very small beer – small beer? As I understand it, it was when water wasn’t safe to drink and a weak kind of beer would be brewed which was considered to be ‘safe’ even for children!  Hence small beer. Brings to mind the saying…’In wine there is truth, in water there is bacteria”.

Catherine Wheel?  That would probably need to be explained…

Points of reference - change.
