Ban my Book, Please……Help Musicians!.....Happy Birthday NHS…..

Ban my Book, Please……

There's no surer way to know
I'm on the right side of history
than to have one of my books banned.

Howl, The Grapes of Wrath,
Uncle Tom's Cabin, Candide,
Canterbury Tales.

I just hope kids are paying attention
and download pirated copies to see
what the adults are freaking out about.

Because it's not really the book, it's the reading,
how mere words on a page or a glowing screen
can make someone else imagine a better world.

They can't burn a PDF or an idea or a memory.
That's why they fear literature. It leads to Freedom.

For Banned Books Week and the Living Poetry Prompt

Indeedy-doodly-do. And the same goes for songs and films – ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ comes to mind – such a bru-ha-ha from folk who obviously didn’t get the point….

Choice. Free will.  What makes us human.

And who can forget what happened when the BBC banned ‘Relax’ by Frankie goes to Hollywood…

I danced, and danced, and danced…..

Help Musicians!.....

The ‘Help Musicians’ Christmas card catalogue arrived which includes this year’s design from Jackie Morris – ‘Fox and hare and Great White Bear’

There is an accompanying story which can be accessed after receiving the card, and an exclusive musical piece provided by ‘You Are Wolf’, the alt-folk project of award-winning British composer, vocalist and author Kerry Andrew, which can also be accessed after receiving the card.

There are a variety of cards on offer, and we couldn’t resist the ‘Four Candles’!

Only people of a certain age might get the reference – The Two Ronnie’s…

Happy Birthday NHS…..

I went to the Balfour, and was pleased to see that there is still a ‘station’ by  the door providing masks and hand sanitizer….

The nurse asked would I prefer if she wore a mask – I said yes – so she did.

The world appears to have decided that Covid has gone away - it hasn’t - and it’s good to see that NHS Orkney are still aware of that fact.

There was a lot of cheery bunting, celebrating the 75th birthday of the NHS…

My Mum & Dad (now passed from this life) remembered how medical treatment worked  before the NHS for those who weren’t rich enough to afford Private health care.  Mum said that …”You either got better, learnt to live with what was wrong with you, or died.”

After so many years of being cared for, folk appear to be forgetting that’s how it was - and how it could be again if we don’t watch out.
