Old ‘Phone Boxes…. Franklin Expedition Daguerreotypes……

Old ‘Phone Boxes….

In last week’s  ‘Orcadian’  there’s an item about adopting red phone boxes for “as little as £1 each” – and Rendall is listed!  There’s no info. about how to go about the ‘adoption’, and we wouldn’t be able to manage looking after it -  but I’m wondering - who would be likely to take it on?

One neighbour observed that we need to keep it as it’s the best way to give directions to the house – and it is too!  I said so in this article….

…since then - the door has disappeared!

I  remember reading this tale, sent to me by a chum in Shetland…

“CAN YOU HELP?

When a group of local residents in and around Walls, in the Shetland Isles heard that their old K6 kiosk was to be taken away they formed a Local Heritage Group and bought the old kiosk for the princely sum of £1.00.  They then set about raising funds and started refurbishing it.

For those of you who are familiar with the Shetland Isles will know that there are few significant structures to use to guide people and this kiosk had become an important waypoint.

Photo shows front of the kiosk with new door and repainted.”

Also - a pic. sent to me by Ian Collins - 101 uses for baling twine.   This is how Ian described it..........

"Here's a phone box, probably the phone box on Graemsay. I thought it had a slightly monumental quality?”

It took me a while to work out what the big red thing on the front of the phone box is – it’s the post box!  Next to, not on, the phone box….

More recently, Ian sent a photo of the phone box at Haybrake by Lyness, Hoy…

He’s had both printed as postcards and the Fossil & Heritage Centre, Burray has a supply….

For that matter – there’s an old red phone box in the yard of the Fossil & Heritage Centre!

Ian likes appealing decrepitude –

Everyone uses mobile phones now – except me – I mostly use our land-line – and the old phone boxes were bound to be de-commissioned before long.

Times…change.

Maybe the Orkney Men’s Shed will expand to the Orkney Men’s Phone Boxes too?

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a similar set of daguerreotypes was found of John Rae and his crew?  You never know – things keep turning up.
