A Student’s View…..

The clue is in the title…..

Archaeology student, farmer, and tourism facilitator Sarah James tells of her experiences while digging the site at Skaill Farm, Rousay this year.  Sarah gives a very ‘human’ view which makes the site, and the processes involved in investigating the site, more accessible to the non-archaeologist.

Archaeology, is people.

From Kilmorack Gallery….

“Helen Denerley's incredible exhibition 'Salvage' is unfortunately a short one, and you don't have long left to see it. Living with her work during this show has made me even more aware of Denerley's love of her material, and in awe of how it has been used. She has savoured fire extinguishers, old British motorbike frames, miniature pickaxes, meat mincers and much more for many years, waiting to find their final anatomical position. This exhibition reveals her unique gift for seeing what brings soul to a sculpture, and an unparalleled knowledge of the 'library of scrap.' The final day of the exhibition is Thursday 31st August.

It will be a busy day because on Thursday the 31st August I also give a talk about 'Confessions of a Highland Art Dealer' at Nairn Book and Arts Festival. You can book a place through their website or purchase a copy from here.

Nairn Book and Art Festival talk | 31st August

The art world is populated by individuals with an urge to do one thing, to make art, and an art dealer isn’t very different. Confessions of a Highland Art Dealer tells the story of how Tony created Kilmorack Gallery in a long-abandoned rural church, and how he survived and adapted to a changing and often surreal world.

Tony’s book has been shortlisted for both the Slightly Foxed First Biography Award 2022 and the Highland Book Prize 2022. His talk is about how Confessions and the gallery came to be, and the need for art in our turbulent times.

Oil….

….is a contentious subject these days – but this article tells of one way in which oil deposits can be of great interest due to what has been preserved in them – not just the tiny organisms which make the oil itself, but larger creatures too.  Read on….
