Visiting Poet’s Graves….

Bartholomew Barker has been visiting poet’s graves again …..

I’m not familiar with Walt Whitman’s work – but the line…

‘If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.”

Tells me something about him – something that chimes with me.

Reminds me of ‘My Spirit Will Not Haunt The Mound’ by Thomas Hardy…

My Spirit Will Not Haunt The Mound’

My spirit will not haunt the mound

Above my breast,

But travel, memory-possessed,

To where my tremulous being found

Life largest, best.

My phantom-footed shape will go

When nightfall grays

Hither and thither along the ways

I and another used to know

In backward days.

And there you’ll find me, if a jot

You still should care

For me, and for my curious air;

If otherwise, then I shall not,

For you, be there.

Thomas Hardy

Walt Whitman’s tomb is impressive, but of all the graves which Bart. has visited, this is the one which drew me to it….

My Favourite River…..

Jackie Morris asked folk to tell her of their favourite river….

I replied…..

‘My favourite river is...me.

I picture myself as a little river - rising from a grassy hillside - babbling along - flowing round the stones that get in my way - into a still pool - where I still swirl and move.

I'm the still pool, and the flowing river, in the pool.

So are you.’

I am also something of a smart-arse.

Return to Swartigill….

As mentioned in the Ness of Brodgar Daily Dig Diary, Rick - Trench T Supervisor at the Ness, headed south to lead the UHI Archaeology excavation at Swartigill in Caithness.  And the UHI blog will follow him there!

Previous Swartigill related items from m’blog…..

“Swartigill….

As Sigurd says, this provides ‘a glimpse of everyday life in Iron Age Scotland that does not centre on the monumental architecture of brochs.’

Much as I like brochs…. https://theorkneynews.scot/page/2/?s=Brochs+Bernie+Bell - there is a bigger picture…..”

And…..

“My lord…just look at this bead….  https://archaeologyorkney.com/2022/08/24/spectacular-iron-age-bead-is-swartigill-excavations-find-of-the-day/

And isn’t it like the one found at Mine Howe …. https://theorkneynews.scot/2019/06/17/the-varied-beauty-of-ancient-beads/

And…it’s translucent…I likes translucent beads.   Keep an eye on Swartigill….

Oh my….”
