Remembering Eddie At Evie….

The tale of Eddie Cummins continues….I sent the following letter to ‘The Orcadian’ and ‘The Orkney News’….

“Dear Editor

Readers of ‘The Orkney News’ might remember my letter asking for information about the last resting place of Eddie Cummins…

Following on from that, Jim Goddin has very generously donated a collection of Eddie’s writing and art-work to the Orkney Library as a long-term loan, and the library staff are adding these to their Archive of Eddie’s work.

This is to let those who are interested know about it so they can check with the Library to find out when the whole collection becomes accessible to the public – though it won’t be catalogued for several months at least, as they have a backlog of new items waiting to be catalogued.

Personally, I’m hoping that the Library will have some kind of exhibition of Eddie’s work to mark their new acquisition.

Jim was also kind enough to show me his collection and reading what’s there makes me think, yet again, that Eddie’s work really does deserve to get continued recognition.  His poem ‘Flamenco’ – takes you there.

Yours

Bernie Bell”

…hoping to keep an awareness of Eddie and his work alive.

It was a lovely sunny August Sunday, so we went to Evie Sands - walked out on the pier and……thought of Eddie…

Either End Of Evie Sands….

We walked left from the pier to the Knowe of Stenso….

Then back to the car and drove round to the Broch of Gurness…

……to sit and eat our sandwiches – where someone had built a tidy stone tower on the shore…

Swandro…

Sitting on the bench by the Broch of Gurness car park, looking through binoculars, we could see the Swandro dig on Rousay – the porta-cabins, the flag, and the people – starting to back-fill…

I explained what we were looking at to a nearby group of people, and it turns out that one of the group was Volunteering at a dig in Gloucestershire, near Slimbridge, where remains of large Roman buildings have been found - early days for the excavation - so they’re not sure exactly what it was……

Connection – Mike & I worked at the Wildfowl & Wetland Trust, Slimbridge years ago, and there was no hint of the presence of that site.

Archaeology marches on.

And  The Ness….

Was it locally available wood? Or driftwood from further afield.”

My tuppenceworth….

“There are some really big pieces – whole tree trunks. The wood which is washed up on Shala’s Orkney from North America in Andrew Appleby’s novel ‘Skara’ comes to mind.”
