Art & Archaeology….

A Ness of Brodgar blog from Artist in Residence Diane Eagles….

I like it that someone ‘cup-marked’ a horned spiral on their kneeling mat…combining two significant forms of carving.

Diane’s exhibition is in Dulwich, London – I wonder will it appear in the NOB blog in some way?   I hope so.

Hedgehog!!!...

Stomping about in the garden in the early evening….

He disappeared into the long grass, where we could hear him munching.

We know they’re there, because we see the poo.....

....but we don’t often see an actual ‘Hog’.

Steps At The Ness….

There are ten days left of the dig at the Ness of Brodgar – eight if you take away the weekend -  and potentially more things to be found there - and I was asking myself what do I see as being ‘the‘ find of this year – so far?

There are all the goings-on in Trench T/Structure 27 – but….what was going on?  Still a mystery.  What will the big lump of organic matter turn out to be?...

https://www.nessofbrodgar.co.uk/2023-day-25/

That might indicate something about what that area was for - but all in all, though full of interest, that area is also full of question-marks – not the ‘star find’ I’m trying to decide on.

I decided that, for me, it’s the steps in/by the Great Wall…..

As far as I know, steps in a Neolithic setting are unusual - maybe a step into a space in a structure, but steps, leading up?  Maybe indicates innovation – new ways of building.

There are lots of steps in Mine Howe…

https://theorkneynews.scot/2017/07/27/bernie-bell-minehowe/

…but Mine Howe is Iron Age.

There’s also the image that the placing of the step’s by/in the Great Wall gives – of people going up the steps to look over the wall?  Or walking along the top of the wall?

So for me, so far, the big ‘find’ for this year is the steps.  Though – there is a tendency on archaeology digs for tremendously significant things to turn up at the end of the day - or the end of the dig.

It’s not over yet, and anything that is found will feature in Sigurd Towrie’s Daily Dig Dairy – which is a boon…

PS

I've been corrected by them as knows.....

"The steps were last year.  First set in 2018."

So I'll amend it to ...they're what I was most pleased to see, this year.
