Ness of Brodgar dig well underway

Archaeologists have been hard at work at the incredible Ness of Brodgar excavation since early July, slowly uncovering more secrets from this sprawling site. The Ness has been under excavation for nearly 20 years now and the dig has gradually revealed a huge complex of Neolithic buildings, dating back more than 5000 years. This year around 60 archaeologists and students have been present throughout the summer. It's the first time the entire site has been uncovered since 2019, giving the team the chance to make real progress on previously dormant parts of the dig.”

Ness Log Supplemental….

Just as I was leaving the site on Tuesday morning (Mike had had enough and gone to sit in the car!), I was talking with a woman who had found a pot – placed upside down – decorated – with something in it, by the paved area round the central standing stone.  She showed me a photo of it on her ‘phone.  I thought – they just keep on coming!

And I thought…isn’t that near to where the baby’s bones were found?...

And I was thinking – general funerary goings-on in that area?  Remembered writing about thinking about bones…

Back to the decorated pot….on Wednesday – in Sigurd’s invaluable Dig Diary – here’s the lady I was talking with…with what, to me, will always be ‘Denise’s Pot’…

And…just an addendum…

Standing by the upper section of Structure 12 (?) – a view through to the Ring of Brodgar…..

When the buildings were there the view wouldn’t be straight through – but – I’m reminded of how Newgrange can be seen from the Visitor Centre…..

The Ness buildings were nearer in time to the Ring being raised – the Newgrange centre is relatively new – but – a similarity in the position of the place of pilgrimage and the place for visitors/pilgrims to go, occurred to me.

After visiting the Ness we went to Lochside Viewpoint to eat our sandwiches – looking across the water and the cairns to the Ness in the distance…..

It’s becoming a tradition – one more year to go….

The Atlantic’…..

The last verse evokes a scene which is very familiar in Orkney…

The Atlantic

The salty sea breeze
rushes over our senses
as we crest the final dune

Sparkling sapphire waves
beckon us to bare our feet
sink into the summer sand
and stroll through the splash

The tide pulls us to the sky
where a distant storm is blending
ocean and air on the gray horizon
