‘Chasing Ice’….. Another Example Of ….From ‘Wild Justice’….

‘Chasing Ice’…..

A friend sent me a DVD of ‘Chasing Ice’ by James Balog, in which time-lapse cameras are used to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers as they ….disappear….

https://chasingice.com/

This was made in 2012 and the situation has escalated since then.

My friend asked what do I make of it?  I replied…

“I’m familiar with his work, as pieces by him crop up as examples of how much humans need to pay attention, compared to how little they are paying attention.

My view is – that we’ve messed up our home planet big time and I’m not sure if we’ll survive as a species – but – the planet will survive and restore itself.

Meanwhile each one of us needs to do what we can – choose – use free will – behave in the way which we believe to be most helpful to all of life – including what is seen as non-life - the mineral resources which are being ruthlessly exploited  - the earth being ravaged by ‘man’ to produce the next model of mobile phone!

I could go on and on – but I don’t think I need to, to you!”

Some of my previous musings - including the ‘comments’ - about ice and what it can tell us…

Another Example Of ….

‘As Man Proposes -  God Disposes’…..God - Nature - however you like to refer to the forces that shape our world - the folk at the Swandro dig are racing against time……

As the ice melts - the waters rise - the sites….disappear.

If you’d like to help to ensure that what’s at Swandro is recorded before it goes….

From ‘Wild Justice’….

Good morning, today we publish a report on the state of Sites of Scientific Interest in England - A Sight for Sore SSSIs - click here to read and/or download.

Do you remember that we told you in an earlier newsletter how to check where your nearest SSSIs were, and what the condition of their units were (see these  three blogs Where is your nearest Site of Special Scientific Interest?, What you've told us about SSSIs 1 and What you've told us about SSSIs 2)? We had noticed, and many of you noticed too, that many SSSIs were last assessed many, many years ago.

So we asked Natural England for the data and have analysed it and the shocking results are in today's report.

Headline results:

  1. Most SSSI Units in England have not been assessed in the last decade (66% by area) - the data are out of date.
  2. Those out of date assessments still form part of the Defra annual reports on SSSI condition, and our analysis shows that the condition of SSSI Units continues to decline - things are getting worse not better.
  3. Looking at the most recent assessments reveals a worse state of SSSIs than the overall figures - things really are getting much worse, not better.

Wild Justice's view:

  1. When Defra and Natural England publish updates on the condition of SSSIs they should include information on how out-of-date are the data.
  2. A rapid catch-up is needed so that 80% of English SSSI Units have had their condition assessed in the last 5 years, so that the results are meaningful.
  3.  Natural England should carry out a review of the resources needed
to ensure that 95% of English SSSIs are in Favourable condition or Unfavourable Recovering condition by 2030, based on 80% of assessments being carried out in the period 2025-2029.

That's it for now. We couldn't do any of this without you.

Thank you,
