The Holy Tree…
In the garden of Tankerness House there’s a tree with a hole right through it….
I wonder how that came to be?

‘The Winds of Mars’…..
Prepare to have your mind blown by Bartholomew Barker……
The Winds of Mars
carved a mountain into a face
that swallows gusts of dust
until a dry planet-sized cough
darkens the entire sky.

Sea-Urchin-Sun-Symbols – Part Two…
In ‘The Stonebook Quartet’ – in the first book – ‘The Stone Book’ – Alan Garner writes….
“Mary cried out. It was wonderful. Father had polished the stone. It was black and full of light, and its heart was a golden, bursting sun.
‘What is it?’ said Mary.
‘Ask the parson‘ said Father.
‘But what is it really?’
‘I can’t tell you’, said Father. ‘ Once, when I was prenticed, we had us a holiday, and I walked to the sea. I left home at two in the morning. I had nothing but half an hour there. And I stood and watched all that water, and all the weeds and shells and creatures; and then I walked back again. And I’ve seen the like of what’s in that pebble only in the sea. They call them urchins. Now you tell me how that urchin got in that flint, and how that flint got on that hill.”
He also writes of ripple-rock…

And of a bull on a wall…

Bull – on the walls of caves.
Bull – in His glory at Knossos.
Bull – brought to Britain
In the Mithras cult
From Rome.
Bull – in Alan Garner’s ‘Thursbitch’ –
“Bull can bide, while folk forget.”
Are we remembering?
And Bull – Dances.

Alan Garner – knows what’s what.

Before ‘The Stone Book Quartet, I read ‘ A Land‘ by Jacquetta Hawkes in which she writes, with great understanding, of the change from when each workman was of his work, to when the Industrial Revolution turned people into un-thinking parts of a machine.
Two books which may appear to be very different, but which touch on a similar vein of life.
And now we have the Anthropocene, in which places such as Tough Tom and fossil beds are dug out and swept away without anyone being aware of their existence….

Cheery sort, ain’t I?
