Campaign: Arms Fair Moves Town (to Telford), Changes Name, Resistance Continues (Zoom meeting, 4 July 7pm)

The Malvern Arms Fair has left town and changed its name, following determined protests by local campaigners,

The arms fair formerly known as 3CDSE is due to take place in Telford, 1st & 2nd November 2023. Now called SDSC-UK, "Specialist Defence and Security" it is focused on equipping elite soldiers or "operators" to wage war in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Somalia and other countries.

Three Counties CAAT, who helped coordinate the Malvern campaign, are inviting anyone interested in resisting the Telford fair to their next meeting on Tues 4 July 7pm to share what they have learned. Email threecountiescaat@gmail.com  or reply to this note for the Zoom details.

Training: Scottish Parliament Lobbying Drop-in (Zoom drop, in 4 July)

The Scottish government has provided over £8m in public grants to arms companies that profit from conflict and repression.  This summer CAAT will be hosting three drop-in sessions for supporters to find out about how to lobby their elected representative

Media: New film on the UK involvement in Syria

London CAAT with film makers Rainbow Collective have launched a new film, “Arms Sales to Dictators, Displacement and Militarised Borders

You can watch the film on YouTube!

There was also a brilliant panel discussion for the launch event which you may not have seen, featuring speakers Les Levidow (Peace in Kurdistan) and Matt Broomfield (Kurdish Solidarity Network), and chaired by London CAAT’s Sam Forrest-Sufrin, who scripted and voiced the film.

You can see past films and panel discussions on the CAAT YouTube channel

Report: Cornwall says no to Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day took place in Falmouth, Cornwall on 24th June 2023. CAAT, alongside national and local groups, including the Peace Pledge Union, Forces Watch, Demilitarise Education, Cornwall Resists and local and national Quakers, were on the streets to show that people were not prepared to stand by and let the military take over the streets of Falmouth.

And From the Glasgow School of Art…

I read an article in ‘The Orkney News’ about what looks like an interesting book - ‘Mousa to Mackintosh’ - recently published by Historic Environment Scotland (HES),  which askes ’What makes Scottish architecture Scottish?’

https://theorkneynews.scot/2023/07/01/what-makes-scottish-architecture-scottish/

The ‘comments’ to this article add extra information.

I realised that I don’t know what’s been happening to the remains of the Glasgow School of Art since the terrible fire of 2018. Considering the extent of the destruction I wondered how the necessary restoration could take place – the cost of doing it properly would be astronomical.

So I ‘Googled’  and read the following article….

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2023/jan/24/glasgow-school-of-art-cost-and-pace-of-rebuild-criticised-after-2018-fire#

It’s good to know that this is happening.

Here are my musings about the GSA…

Still In Glasgow…

Last year the Glasgow Mela was televised – we watched it – and very much enjoyed it…

http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=16068

I looked for this year’s Mela in the telly listings - no sign so far - but I did find a report of it in ‘Glasgow Live’….

It takes more than a drop of rain to dampen that outpouring of vibrant life and colour.
