I received my on-line copy of the most recent Ness Newsletter, containing much of interest about this year’s dig and the site in general.

I can't copy over the link for this but, when it appears on the Newsletter page on the Ness website - I'll do so then.

Meanwhile, if you’d like to sign up, you can get the Newsletter sent straight to you…

Swandro....

It’s That Time Of Year…..Can ‘Ya Dig It?....

The Orkney flag flying over our information boards can mean only one thing - the 2023 excavation has started!  This means that we are now posting daily updates on our website dig diary, and you can also follow our Facebook page   to keep in touch with all of this year's developments.

Orkney is currently experiencing some very un-Orkney like weather, a long run of no rain at all following a very dry cold spring means everywhere is dried out and baking in the heat.
It's been so dry that even the bog at the landward side of the site has dried up, which we've never seen before, it's usually knee deep in water. This has provided us with an unexpected opportunity to have a look at a section of the lower field over the boundary wall at the bottom of site, in the hope of finding a continuation of the Norse longhouse excavated by Sigrid Kaland in the 1960s. It wasn't possible at the time of the earlier excavation to closely date the buildings uncovered, but we're hoping that we can use the exceptionally dry ground conditions to examine the possible middens and maybe further structural remains associated with Kaland's longhouse.

The overhead pic below shows the outline of the longhouse with the boundary wall and the area over the wall where we're putting the new trench, with the sandbags of the main site in the bottom left corner. It does show you just how extensive the whole site is:

Although we've been cursing the sweltering hot weather we might be wishing for it back tomorrow, having just noticed the yellow weather warning that the Met Office has out for lots of areas including us - floodwater, lightning strikes, large hail or strong winds were the highlights - wish us luck!

We need your help to fund our work! You may make a donation using your credit card, debit card, PayPal account or set up a direct debit from your UK bank account. US taxpayers who wish to make a US tax-deductible donation of $500 or more to us via CAF America, a US 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit please click here for more information
