More From ‘Unbound’……
The Low Road
Norfolk, 1813. In the quiet Waveney Valley, the body of a woman – Mary Tyrell – is staked through the heart after her death by suicide. She had been under arrest for the suspected murder of her newborn child. Mary leaves behind a young daughter, Hannah, who is later sent away to the Refuge for the Destitute in London, where she will be trained for a life of domestic service.
It is at the Refuge that Hannah meets Annie Simpkins, a fellow resident, and together they forge a friendship that deepens into passionate love. But the strength of this bond is put to the test when the girls are caught stealing from the Refuge's laundry, and they are sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay, setting them on separate paths that may never cross again.
I Could Read The Sky
A new edition of the 1997 classic novel about an Irishman in London, told through words and photos.
Timothy O’Grady’s tender, vivid prose and Steve Pyke’s starkly beautiful photographs combine to make a unique work of fiction, an act of remembering suffused with loss, defiance and an unforgettable loveliness. An Irish life with echoes of the lives of unregarded migrant workers everywhere. Since it was first published in 1997, I Could Read the Sky has achieved the status of a classic.

The story told in ‘The Low Road’ reminds me of the tale of Marjory Meason….

A Short Story…
Seeing this…
https://twitter.com/5x15stories/status/1671626573915488258?cxt=HHwWhICw9eTg57IuAAAA
…took me back to a visit to the big glasshouse at Kew. We encountered a woman who was distraught because she had lost sight of her young son, Timothy.
We looked about us from a high-up gantry – and saw Timothy right across the way – looking lost. I summoned up The Voice my Dad taught me for training dogs and shouted ‘TIMMMMMOTHYYYYYYYYYY!!!!’.
The lad jumped out of his skin – then looked across to where we were standing. I pointed at his Mum. Then pointed at him to stay put.
His Mum set off to meet with him, and I and my chums watched until she got there, and they both waved.
Sometimes it’s good to have The Voice. It also works on unruly drunks.
