Retirement……Poppies…. The Cairns - Days Three & Four…. FYI…

by Bernie Bell - 09:05 on 16 June 2023

Retirement……

My shoes are getting dusty

In the bottom of the wardrobe.

I only go out for walks.

I wonder

Should I send them to the charity shop

Or wait and see what happens?

People are wishing Mike well on his Retirement

Telling us to enjoy our time together.

And we will

Once we get through dealing with the reason

That he needed to retire.

Meanwhile - we try to live

In acceptance - and hope -

And retirement.

And I watch the life in the garden.

I wonder who will read this – and what their response will be?

Poppies…

…in our garden….

‘Big Poppy’

Hot-eyed Mafia Queen!

At the trim garden’s edge

She sways towards August.

A Bumble Bee

Clambers into her drunken, fractured goblet –

Up the royal carpet of down-hung,

Shrivel-edged, unhinged petal, her first-about-to-fall.

He’s in there as she sways. He utters thin

Sizzling bleats of difficult enjoyment.

Her carnival paper skirts, luminous near-orange,

Embrace him helplessly.

Already her dark pod is cooking its drug.

Every breath imperils her.  Her crucible

Is falling apart with its own fierceness.

A fly, cool, rests on the flame-fringe.

Soon she’ll throw off her skirts

Withering into vestal afterlife,

Bleeding inwardly

Her maternal nectars into her own

Coffin – (cradle of her offspring).

Then we shall say:

She wore herself in her hair, in her day,

And we could see nothing but her huge flop of petal,

Her big, lewd, bold eye, in its sooty lashes,

And that stripped, athletic leg, hairy

In a fling of abandon – ‘

Ted Hughes

I looked for a poem about Welsh Poppies - but couldn’t find one that I liked.

So thought I’d have a go myself….

Welsh Poppy

Small, delicate

Yet perennial

Golden, from butter-pale

To sun-orange

Seeds profusely

I’m pleased to say.
