Alternative Island With Mysterious Stones….

And I quote…..

“Professors Jane Downes and Colin Richards are back in the South Pacific as part of an ongoing project to document endangered cultural heritage sites in the Cook Islands and Niue.”

We have a picture of this on our bathroom door – it fascinates me – the navel of the world?.....

The Cairns Dig – Day Two…

In which a young archaeologist learns the value of sunscreen – even in Orkney!

If you’d like to help to ensure that this intriguing dig can continue - you could go to the Orkney Archaeology Society website donations page and, as a comment, state that you would like your donation to specifically go to the dig at The Cairns – as we did …..

Grelda…

Our neighbour has found Ground-elder growing in his flower border and asked our opinion on what was best to do about it.  Response was that it’s a pernicious weed and we had to admit that we don’t know the answer…. https://www.rhs.org.uk/weeds/ground-elder

Mike is reading ‘Weeds’ by Richard Mabey, who writes on the subject of Ground-Elder…

“Our wide herbaceous border was thick with ground-elder when we moved in.  Constant hoeing and hand-weeding reduced its visible presence, but more would appear just weeks later.  It has been the bane of Polly’s gardening life, and she has made an inspired contraction of the name of the seemingly immortal witch-weed, to focus her hostility.  She calls it Grelda.”

Polly takes drastic action against Grelda – thinks she’s been successful, but it repeatedly re-appears.  Richard & Polly Mabey wouldn’t be prepared to use weedkillers.  He doesn’t relate what eventually happened….

Our neighbour is also reluctant to use weed-killers,  and I’m not even sure if the most vicious herbicide would deal with it effectively.

If it’s come through from the garden next door, it will need to be dealt with there too.

I’ve heard it said that the best thing to do if you find Ground-elder in your garden is…MOVE HOUSE!

F.Y.I…..

My blog might get a bit thin -  at the moment - I’m focusing on trying to deal with life.
