Pics of Scotland….

…..12th to 19th of May 2023

Good to see Orkney included, not once, but twice!  My favourite for this week is the fungal cluster from Mike Andrew….

Parenting….

Our neighbour has some domestic geese, which presently are ‘minding’ two goslings.  The adults stay close to the young ones to keep them safe.  I was watching the geese from our window - two of the adults were near to the goslings, while three others were nearby.

A big gull landed not far away, and started pacing towards the babies. The two adults near the goslings closed in, even nearer, while the other three rushed at the gull, which flew off.

There used to be a saying that it took a village to raise a child – that all children should be cared for by all adults.  Only two of these geese produced the goslings – but they all watch over them.

These days, there’s an added threat from stoats.  Our neighbour has lost five of his ducks to stoats – apparently the way they were killed is indicative of a stoat attack….

I think maybe even a stoat would think twice about taking on five angry adult geese!

You Can Tell A Lot…

…from a coprolite…

I’m wondering though – which broch? There are a couple near the Hall of Rendall…

Our neighbour  has found some interesting bits & pieces near the one by St. Thomas Kirk, including a loom/fishing weight, also a piece of what he thinks might possibly be worked bone. And…. what looks very, very much like a hand axe - found on the same section of beach, down from the broch.

There’s a good example of a dinosaur coprolite in the Fossil & Heritage Centre, Burray…..

“There are also some, let’s say unusual, fossils, such as the coprolite – what’s a coprolite?  Fossilized poo, that’s what!
